Join me for a fabulous five day workshop photographing the exceptional beauty of the Lake District in Autumn. November sees a riot of colour among England's most impressive mountain scenery and from our base in Keswick we will not only explore the classics, but also focus on the lesser seen images and compositions.
The workshop starts on Tuesday 7th November and ends at dusk on Saturday 11th November 2017. We will be staying at the fabulous Lakeside House Hotel in Keswick, a modern and friendly hotel which will give us central access to many incredible opportunities. With spectacular views literally minutes away from the hotel, the photography will centre itself around mountan vistas and lakeside reflections, from the popular to lesser known locations. We will explore some big hitters - The Great Langdales, Loughrigg, Grasmere from more unusual angles, as well as undertaking some extensive visits and exploration around the Borrowdale area, which every year holds some of the most fabulous colour in Lakes. With my extensive knowledge to guide you to image success, we will make some truly memorable pictures in this exquisite time of year.
Five days at least are needed in The Lakes, as weather can be unpredictable. I took some of my best Lakeland images last year in breaks between snow and driving rain, so expect the unexpected.
The group will be location but not too far from shelter, should the weather change. The changeable light can work to our total advantage, so expect to be shooting at all times and taking advantage of the dawn and evening light. If the skies clear, come out and learn some night photography skills, by light painting Castlerigg Stone Circle. Many places are designated dark sky areas so why not learn some exciting new skills.
Whether expert or beginner, there is something for everyone. Expect technical and compositional advice as well as evenings of helpful conversation and post processing assistance guaranteed.
An array of focal lengths will always benefit the Lakeland photographer. A wide angle lens (16-35), medium zoom (24-70) and a longer zoom (70-300) will be ideal to cover most compositional eventualities. The most used will be in the 24-70 range as a super wide angle doesn’t always translate, so make sure this focal length is covered. It’s best not to weigh yourself down, so why not bring an airport style bag for all your kit and a smaller day bag, which you can decant equipment into throughout the day.
Ensure you bring good quality footwear. Walking boots are essential. Also bring a pair of wellingtons with thick socks as the ground is often boggy in certain places. We may also need to cross shallow streams. The Lakes can be very cold in November, so don’t get caught out. Pack a comfortable mid layer, even a down jacket, but don’t forget waterproof trousers and a high quality waterproof coat. Ensure a hat and gloves are part of your wardrobe as early mornings can see significant drops in temperature.
Meet up time is 11am on the morning at the Lakeside House Hotel on Tuesday 31st October 2017. We will be able to leave luggage and head straight out for the day should rooms not be available, to maximise the first day.
There is parking available at the hotel, but they also hold free permits for the long stay carpark over the road should this not be available.
Although not essential, its a great idea to bring a laptop computer with you so you can discuss imagery with myself and others in the group. It really is a great learning experience, so I highly recommend bringing a laptop to learn and for personal entertainment.
I make a point of tutoring all my clients on digital photography to help complete the learning process. I am renowned as a leading digital professional and an Adobe Influencer and I will be screen recording my sessions so the learning continues. I have extensive knowledge to communicate on all levels and I spend time with all my clients helping them to process their images to a high standard. It really helps to have a computer session when tiredness takes hold, or inclement weather persists.
The tour will involve some extensive and steep walking, but it will not be a gruelling experience. We will be out doors for long periods, but I always ensure a coffee break when we need it.
