Eureka Dunes II
  • Another remarkable display of aurora on the last night of the Lofoten Islands workshop. This is 2.45am in -28c as a HUGE corona burst overhead. This is so large I could barely capture it at 14mm. These immense shapes give you no time to think. Finland, Scandinavia
  • A frozen forest, the moon setting, shot in -25c with an ice encrusted Canon 5D2,on the edge of Finland.
  • A rather delightful display of lower level aurora, three distinct bands of green, near Sweden.

  • This is Lone Pine. It's the first example I have that combines a torch lit image and a star tracked sky. This of course makes this image an exposure blend, but not in the conventional sense. Although it may not look as impressive as a low res, its an incredible hi-res, as all the stars are perfectly intact, without any trails whatsoever. First image for the ground was ISO800 for 30secs lit with a conventional torch. Then the tracker was turned on and a second image was made at ISO400 for 3mins, all using the Contax 35-70 f3.4 at f8. This naturally means the ground is going to blur, but its an easy cut out and montage to do. This image is just the starting point and doesn't represent the maximum potential whatsoever. For me, it's just the beginning of something truly wonderful in my workflow.
  • The rather wonderful Orion Nebula, which can just be made out with the naked eye if its dark enough. Taken with a 70-300 f4-5.6L and a 5D2 and a tracking mount.
  • Just incredible, certainly one of the shots of the night with some beautiful colours, hidden in this lower level aurora.... Shot with at 14mm using the 14-24 and 5D2. There's a 1Dx with my name on it...

  • The white is an on coming car headlights, the red is Gary hitting the brake lights, how fabulous and a total stroke of luck. Very slight aurora in the background, Finland, Scandanavia.

  • Lanyon Quiot in Cornwall photographed in moonlight, a neolithic burial chamber at Lands End with the Great Bear constellation overhead, Cornwall, UK
  • Moonlit night at Coombestone Tor, Orion or The Hunter constellation rising over the main tor, Dartmoor, Devon, England

  • Just for some reference hardly a 'great shot' - but shows where all the current solar activity is coming from. the numbers from top to bottom are 1304, 1302, 1305 and 1306. It was taken with a 300mm f2.8 + 2xII and 1.4xII converters to make 840mm, which still wasn't long enough. This is a rather heavy crop.
