![]() The Stata Centre in Boston's M.I.T, USA. Dipping into my recent travels, I thought I would show of this remarkable structure. This building is a photographers dream come true, courtesy of Frank O. Gehry, whose work I have been a great fan of for many years. This was somewhat of a pilgrimage for me and I have also photographed and drooled over the Fred and Ginger building in Prague and impossible DZ Bank in Berlin to which I am returning to in Feb 2010. A cost effective building? How does $300m sound? The metallic exterior makes the Stata such a dynamic abstract, with light bouncing off literally every curve, but despite the building being such a revelation, its caused nothing but headaches for our Frank. The M.I.T sued Gehry for because - 'soon after its completion in spring 2004, the center's outdoor amphitheater began to crack due to drainage problems. Snow and ice cascaded dangerously from window boxes and other projecting roof areas, blocking emergency exits and damaging other parts of the building. Mold grew on the center's brick exterior, the suit says, and there were persistent leaks throughout the building.' (Boston Globe) Gehry responded it was all thanks to cost cutting and 'value engineering', ... value engineering?! At $300m? That certainly made me smile. ![]() Can you guess what it is yet? No, me neither...
